Nowadays, we are surrounded by various harmful elements such as pollution and harmful ultraviolet rays. It is known proven scientifically that our only defence against the sun, the ozone layer, is growing thinner and thinner. Hence, our skin health is challenged by intensive sun rays.

Ultraviolet B or UVB rays are almost entirely absorbed into the ozone layer. In most cases this type of rays are responsible for sun burns produced at the superficial levels of the skin. On the other hand, the Ultraviolet A or UVA rays are less intensive than the UVB, but they have the ability of penetrating the skin. UVA rays can lead to the development of skin cancer, skin aging and even wrinkling.

SPF or sun protection factor does not refer to the quantity of protection provided by a certain sunscreen. SPF means how long UVB rays will take to redden the skin with sunscreen. There are available on the market sun creams with a broad spectrum meant to protect against both types of UV rays.

So, you may wonder how to choose the correct sunscreen for your skin. For those that spend most of the time indoors, it is best to use an everyday cream that has SPF 15. Today almost all creams have a bit of sunscreen in them exactly for this purpose. On the other hand, for those that perform outdoor activities it is recommended to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen. It will offer protection against both types of UV rays keeping your skin under a layer of protection. Usually, it is best to use waterproof cream, but any type of high SPF sunscreen can do the job.

In reality it is not enough to use some cream with SPF. During summer months, it is best to take into account some other tips regarding how to protect your skin from sun damage. First of all, besides sunscreen, you will have to use hats and glasses. It will diminish your exposure and protect your eyes too. Also, specialists advise that you seek shade during midday hours because this is the time of the day when the UV rays are the most powerful.

Other tips include hydrating your skin. Opt for a moisturizer that has alpha hydroxyl cleansers or AHA in order for your skin to properly adjust to the climatic changes. Moreover, it is best to wash our face only twice a day with warm water. Over cleaning or using cold water it can lead to permanent damage to your skin and irritations. Do not forget to protect your lips too! They are also sensitive and can get sun burned if not cared properly. There are available on the market lip balms with sunscreen or SPF that can prevent burns and hydrate your skin in a correct manner.

Always keep in mind that exposure to sun can lead to in-depth changes to your skin such as cancerous skin lesions, wrinkles, freckles, benign tumours and even first and second degree burns. Specialists say there is no such thing as a healthy tan! Hence, you will have to be careful with your skin.
